7mm-08, good round?
Does anyone have experience with this round?
I've owned a Winchester model 70 30-06, someone in a local trade paper has Remington 700 7mm-08 with a scope (he said "good scope") and 500rds of ammo for $350, supposedly in very good condition, walnut stock. Seems like a steal, since the ammo alone is worth well over $100 and the scope should be worth at least $50, so around $200 for the gun :clap2: I've read some things on the internet, less kick than a 30-06 but a nice flat trajectory. I'm seriously thinking about this, sounds like a good price. Any thoughts? Peace TLM |
Re: 7mm-08, good round?
That's not a bad price at all.
Be forewarned that the 7mm is a good cartridge but it will always be more expensive than mainstream calibers like 308. I think it is false economy to get a cheap rifle that uses expensive ammo. |
Re: 7mm-08, good round?
I've been told that it is a good round for youngins to learn how to hunt because of the low recoil. It is a 7mm bullet necked into a .308 cartridge.

I won't go through 25 boxes of ammo. Maybe a few boxes getting used to it, maybe 1 box for actual hunting. Save the rest for selling with the rifle. |
Re: 7mm-08, good round?
Ive heard form reliable sources its a good cartridge, Ive never shot one though

Re: 7mm-08, good round?
this round is popular in Europe because 762x51 aka 308 is prohibited for civilians, generally.

Re: 7mm-08, good round?
I was standing right next to my friend when he used his 7mm to take down a racing buck right at the very top of a ridge line. He was just charging up the mountainside evading the hunters below. At the crack of dawn well over 100 yards in the Utah Mountains. Amazing shot.
:adore: amazing shot. |

7x57 mauser is a pretty popular hunting rifle and cartridge from the old days, not quite the round that 7 mm 08 is

Re: 7mm-08, good round?
That's a good round.
If the gun checks out, I would probably go for it. You have to be a little careful - don't make a final decision until you meet him, see what he's like and check the guy out - Sometimes, shooters get excited about a new caliber, new whatever - and will let something nice go relatively cheap. Other times, they're trying to pawn off some type of problem on you. Biggest thing is check the bore and muzzle carefully. Also, try and determine how many rounds he has through it. I got a super deal on a Browning BLR 308. Came with four or five box remnants of different brands of ammo. Took it to the range, and I saw why he got rid of it cheap - gun wouldn't shoot an 8" circle at 50 yards with factory ammo - I sent it back to Browning, they crowned the muzzle for free even though I wasn't the original owner. I developed handloads that shoot just about as good as a varmint rifle. |
Re: 7mm-08, good round?
I stay away from the less popular cartridges, but there is nothing wrong with 7mm-08, especially at that price. It probably has a cheap chinese scope and aluminum bases and rings. If the rifle is sound you can't really go wrong.

Yeah, but DON'T get rid of the '06.

Re: 7mm-08, good round?
Remington 700 short action for $350? The action alone is worth that much w/o barrel, trigger, stock, etc. Take it!
 Get a second pair of eyes to check it out if needed. Don't take the ammo if it's handloaded, you don't have any control over the safety of handloaded ammo unless it's your own... If it doesn't shoot straight with a box of Remington green-box ammo, it's most likely the shooter. If not, the 700 is easy to get parts & labor to fix. My 30-06 looks like a couple of pandas forged it from a bamboo pole, but it will drop 155 gr Berger LTB's into 6" at 500 yrds pretty regularly. Keep the Winchester, they stopped making them. If you're in AZ, I'll take it (either) off your hands for $350 if it doesn't work out for you... :) Orion |
Re: 7mm-08, good round?
Thanks for the input guys,
I'll check it over carefully. Hopefully it hasn't already sold. If it's in good shape I'll buy it, I figure I could hunt with it for a few years and get most or all of my money back when I sell it. \Peace TLM |
Re: 7mm-08, good round?
My father used a 7mm-08 for years and bagged plenty of deer, an elk and even a moose or two with it. Very capable cartridge if you are a decent shot.

Re: 7mm-08, good round?
The 7mm-08 is an excellent round. It has slightly better ballistics than the 7x57mauser and is a very capable deer/elk cartridge out to 300-350 yards if the shooter does his job and the recoil is very light. I've shot one that a friend of mine has that will shoot 1" groups at 100 yards if you do your part and his a Rem Mountain rifle off the rack with Bushnell scope on it. I would not be afraid to buy, heck buy it and I'll buy it from you sight unseen! Ammo is not as expensive for it as you think. I've seen ammo for $15 a box on sale. Even cheaper if you reload.

Re: 7mm-08, good round?
Turns out the whole thing was a scam.
I knew it sounded to good to be true, but sometimes you get lucky with a good deal, I have before I finally got in touch with the guy, I told him I needed directions, about 40 miles away from where I work. Once he realized how far I was driving, he said, "Oh there was a misprint it's a SK not a Remington!" The guy was lying out his arse, there's no way you can have a misprint like that when the ad specifically said, "Remington 700 BDL 7mm-08", how in the hell can that be a misprint from SK 7mm-08???? The dude was lying, and when he realized how far I was traveling he knew I'd be really pissed off when I got there and it wasn't what he was advertising. Scum bag... |
